Root Canals

Protect and Keep Your Natural Teeth

Your natural teeth are precious. You should do everything you can to keep them healthy. But if one does get infected due to injury or decay, we can help save it. At Triunity Family Dental, our dentists use diagnostic technologies that aid in the diagnosis and treatment planning.

Root canals are performed when decay enters the pulp chamber at the center of a tooth. This area is home to the nerves and blood supply for the tooth, which is why a particularly painful tooth might need a root canal. By removing the infected pulp, the pain and infection are eliminated and the tooth itself can be saved.

Do You Need a Root Canal?

Root canals are performed on teeth that become infected as a result of decay or injury. If you’re experiencing one of the following symptoms, we recommend you make an appointment for a full evaluation at our office:

  • Chronic tooth pain from contact with hot and cold liquids
  • Intense pain when biting down or when pressure is applied to your tooth

We will use digital x-ray technology and laser diagnostic technologies, as well as years of experience diagnosing and treating tooth pain and decay, to determine if you need a root canal. If treatment is necessary, we will refer you to a qualified endodontic specialist.

As part of this process, the Winnipeg- based root canal specialists, who we refer you to, will help you understand the health of your teeth, including:

    • Possible causes, and the extent of any tooth decay we find
    • The dangers an infection might pose
    • The options available to you for replacing the tooth structure removed as part of the root canal procedure
    • Your desire to maintain a natural, white, and healthy smile for a lifetime

Did You Know?

Endodontic treatments have changed quite a bit over the years. For decades dentists used gold crowns to cap teeth treated with a root canal. Crowns cover the remaining tooth structure and help prevent it from fracturing. Eventually, more natural looking porcelain crowns became available.

Until recently, all crowns were made by taking an impression of the tooth and having a crown custom-made by a dental laboratory. This process could take weeks and in the meantime, patients would have to wear a temporary crown made from a less-durable material. Then they would have to come back for another appointment to have their permanent crown placed.

We still offer traditional porcelain crowns at Triunity Family Dental. Soon, we hope to implement the Single visit crown protocol. Using 3D imaging and CAD fabrication technology , we can make a model of your tooth, build your permanent crown, and bond it to your tooth in just a single visit.

Why Root Canals Are The Best Treatment Option

When your tooth’s pulp is infected to the point that Triunity Family Dental team might recommend a root canal treatment.

When an infected tooth isn’t treated…

  • Serious infections can develop and spread into your bone structure and beyond.
  • Your tooth will die and need to be removed.

There are no disadvantages to having a root canal. If your tooth is infected, this is your only option to save and keep as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.
