A CHILD’S FIRST DENTAL VISIT

Visiting your dentist at an early age is a good start to dental care. The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) advises that a child have their first dental visit at about 6months of age when the first tooth begins to erupt or by 1 year of age, whichever comes first.

The first step is choosing a dentist; this might be that of the parent or a pediatric dentist. It is important that the first visit is a memorable one. If the parent might be nervous, you can ask a spouse or family member to help you with the dental visit.

During such visits, we avoid sentences like ‘It would not hurt you’ or ‘the doctor is going to use a needle’ as this may affect the child’s behavior and attitude negatively. Furthermore, you do not have to wait for dental problems to occur before the first dental visit.

A good first dental visit sets precedence for future dental visits. Ensure to make the first dental visit memorable!
